Up and Coming : Ground Up

Since I got to Temple I have been looking for up and coming local rappers that I believe had potential to make it big. So for my first "Up and Coming" post I present to you Ground Up.


Ground Up is a hip-hop trio based out of North Philadelphia. The group is made up of Azar and Malakai, two MC’s and a producer, Bij Lincolns. Whether they are playing a Block Party or in a frat house basement, Ground Up grasps the attention of the audience and never seems to let it go. Tirelessly working, the Group is currently putting the finishing touches on their newest and most intriguing release, Canned Goods. It seems that nothing will prevent the group from continuing to make good music their way; from the ground up.


After listening to this this group, they reminded me a lot of a new age Tribe Called Quest with a mix and chemistry similar to Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y. Both MC's have solid flows and metaphors. I believe with the right chance and opportunity, this group can blow up. When looking at either their Myspace or Facebook page you can see the dedication that this group has and is putting in. If you aren't a AZ fan I can understand that. But if you are a true Nas fan, then you better know who AZ is at least. AZ was the long time rapping partner of Mr. Nasir Jones, and most famous for his part on "Life's A Bitch" of Nas' Illmatic. After listening to this album I came to the realization of 1 thing. Nas is the hip-hop Steve Nash. Why? He makes everyone else around him nice. AZ is sick. His flow is very similar to Nas which is not a bad thing at all. This album reminded me a lot of Illmatic, which I believe is one of the best hip hop albums of all time. So being compared to that is not bad. Check it out. Enjoy.

I was just informed about this group yesterday by my man Jon Stephenson. Chiddy Bang is legit. I love their flow on the track "Opposite of Adults". After hearing how I missed a recent Wiz Khalifa concert back home at 9:30 club in Baltimore, I was brought back to this album. And after smoking a certain substance, I remembered how much I love this album. Wiz and Curren$y are an excellent duo. There laid back flows go well over every track and if you happen to be rolling up, it makes the experience 10X better. Even if you live above the influence, this album will either a) still be good or b) make you roll up. Enjoy. 

Drake's Thank Me Later to drop May 25th

Drake’s debut album Thank Me Later will be released on May 25th. So far, confirmed guests include Jay-Z, The-Dream, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne. Mark your calendars, this album should be sick.

More album details have merged for Yeezy’s highly anticipated 5th album.. Kanye is in Hawaii currently recording for the album, but expected thus far production/features include RZA, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Drake, Clipse, and Big Sean. No word on a album title or release date now.

Royce Da 5′9″ Prefers Flow Over Subject Matter

In an audio interview from the book "How to Rap" Royce Da 5'9" says he favors an ill flow over subject matter. Personally, I’d prefer a mix of both but if I had to choose it would be flow. Take for instance Nas. He raps about similar things in every song but his flow is disgustingly good. What some artists lack for in lyrical ability, they make up in flow. But some people's lyrics get lost in a bad flow. Interesting debate. Any Opinions?

The Kid Cudi Lesson

Kid Cudi was recently at Morehouse College earlier this week to speak to a class of students who take “Hip Hop 2020″. ‘What is Hip Hop Studies 2010′ explores artists music & lyrics and this year they explored the music of Kid Cudi in a lesson called “The Kid Cudi Lesson”. Dr. Wilson who teaches the course, said she chose Cudi because she believes he is a ‘renaissance rapper’

Mikey and Chuck English go in on every track bringing back an old school flavor with chill lyrics that everyone can connect with. The tape features the usual lackadaisical attitude, geeky references and early hip-hop idolization that comes with listening to the Chi-Town duo Whether its tracks like Weekend Girls, or Cinnamon, there is a track for everyone. Album Review - "Seared Foie Gras w/ Quince and Cranberry" - Asher Roth

When even looking at the album cover and name of Asher Roth's new mixtape Seared Foie Gras w/ Quince and Cranberry, you already know that this mixtape is going to be unique. And surprisingly it was. I was expecting this mixtape to be very similar Asher's Asleep In The Bread Aisle. Upbeat, childish, and catchy with songs like Lark On My Go Kart, I Love College, and Blunt Cruisin. However Asher Paul Roth had something else in mind. The mixtape start on a hard track Muddy Swim Trunks which has a nice slow beat and bass line that you would find being blasted out of a 64' ghostriding down the street. One thing I like most about the mixtape was the way Asher not only changed the type of beats he raps on but the seriousness of his raps. He is truly evolving to a true MC, not just a one hit college wonder. He also incorpoartes rappers such as B.O.B and Talib Kweli and raps on numerous beats by producing greats 9th Wonder, Pharell, Kanye, Just Blaze, and the late J Dilla. His Dj, Dj Wreckineyes is also sick, changing seamlessly between songs and adding a unique piece to each song. Asher definitely impressed me with the mixtape, figuring it has been on repeat for about 24 hours now. Check it out if you haven't already.

Album Review - "Plastic Beach" Gorillaz

The British electronic band the Gorillaz come out with there 3rd studio album Plastic Beach.  And unlike their previous albums, they add a new aspect to their already unique group. In this album we see a plethora of influential rappers such as Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, Mick Jones, Paul Simonen, Kano, Bashy, Little Dragon, Bobby Womack and more. Each bringing their  own unique hip hop flow to make truly unique tracks. 
One thing that grabbed me about this album was the varitey of different songs. You have upbeat tracks such as Stylo, Superfast Jellyfish, and Sweepstakes. And then you have nice slow songs such as Orchestral Intro, Empire Ants, and On Melancholy Hill. Definitley want to check out this album if you are looking for something new.

Big Sean Freestyle

Stop. If Big Sean is going to spit bars like this drunk, I don't want to hear his sober work. Granted he spit a couple bars off his new song Poed Up, but regardless this man is nice. If you don't already know Big Sean is the next best thing, so keep your eyes and your ears ready.

After recently listening to K'naan's new song in honor of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, I found myself listening to Troubadour again. I love this album and I love K'naan's message. I first heard K'naan back at Rock The Bells back in the summer of 2009. And I was throughly impressed. So I did my research. Born and raised in Somalia, this influential rapper has interesting flow. His unique voice and message, not to mention the overall island feel his album lets off, makes it so track like Wavin' Flag and Somalia some of my favorites. Definitely check out this album. Enjoy.

Made You Look - Diggy Simmons

I was apprehensive about listening to this song, because of the name. I was not a fan of the television show Run's House that came on MTV and I remember Diggy Simmons as a annoying rich kid rather than a rapper. And the fact that I heard his older brother "attempt" to rap, didn't help his case either. HOWEVER, after being tipped off about this song I decided to give it a listen. Diggy Simmons has some skills. He goes in on a classic Nas track and holds his own. Definitely check him out. Enjoy.

Album Review- "There Is No Competition 2" - Fabolous

I am a strong believer of not fixing something that isn't broken. With that said Fabolous' recent mixtape There Is No Competition 2 was not I wanted. Why do you ask? I like Fabolous don't get me wrong, but I was expecting something new and different from Fabo. Something that when I heard it would make me say 'Oh Shit! Where did this come from!' However, I did not receive that.  Instead I received the same flow, in the same verse structure, on top of DJ Drama's typical beats and sound bites. Which is still hard nonetheless but not what I personally wanted. Now, do not take this as a negative review. If I didn't like the album I wouldn't have taken the time to type this. I still like the album and I would suggest all who read to download if you haven't already.I'm just coming from the stand point of where I was expecting something new and was not given it. That is all.

I have some pretty high expectations for this mixtape. Not being the biggest Fabolous fan I have to admit that I was impressed by his last mixtape Loso's Way. I will be giving this an in-depth look and I'm hoping to not be disappointed or angered. A review will be posted soon.

The Roots "How I Got Over" Drops June 8th

Definitely my favorite band The Roots, is expected to drop their ninth and final album on June 8th. I don't know about you but I know I'm marking my calendar as we speak.
